Terms of service

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of Soonest, a calendar app for Android with the package name app.soonest that will be distributed through Google Play (“the App”). By downloading, installing or using the App, you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the App.

The App is developed and published by Gabriele Lippi, an individual developer (“the Developer”, “we”, “us”). You can reach us at github.com/glippi/soonest/issues, Soonest’s issue tracker.

How the App handles information is described in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms.

What the App is

Soonest is a calendar. It shows, creates and changes events in Android’s own calendar storage, so it works with the calendar accounts already on your phone, and with a calendar kept on the phone alone. It has no account of its own, no developer-operated server and no internet permission.

A plain-language description of the App is on its overview page.

Free software

Soonest is free software: you can redistribute it and modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation, either version 3 of the License or, at your option, any later version. Its source code is published at github.com/glippi/soonest.

That licence, not these Terms, governs running, studying, copying, modifying and distributing the App’s code. Nothing in these Terms takes away any right the GNU General Public License gives you; where the two appear to differ, the licence prevails.

The name “Soonest” and its icon are not covered by the licence. Forks are welcome, under another name and icon.

The fonts the App ships keep their own licence, the SIL Open Font License 1.1, and the AndroidX and Kotlin libraries it uses keep theirs, the Apache License 2.0.

Price

The App is free. There are no in-app purchases, no subscriptions and no ads, and nothing in the App is locked behind a payment. Once it is on Google Play, downloading it there is also subject to Google Play’s Terms of Service.

Your calendar stays yours

Your events live in Android’s calendar storage and in the calendar accounts you added to Android. The App reads and changes them only when you ask, or when an assistant asks on your behalf to add an event. Changes to an account’s calendar are synced by that account, under its provider’s terms, and deleting an event there removes it from every device that calendar syncs to.

Uninstalling the App does not delete your events, and a calendar kept on the phone stays until you delete it. The Developer holds no copy of anything and cannot restore it, so keep your own backup of what you cannot afford to lose: a calendar account that syncs, or an exported .ics file.

Reminders and countdowns are aids, not guarantees

Reminders come from Android’s calendar storage and depend on your device: the notification permission, battery-optimisation settings, Do Not Disturb and the device’s clock. If another calendar app on the phone also reminds you, both may notify; keep reminders on in one of them. Countdowns, and Live Updates on Android 16 and later, depend on your Android version.

No guarantee is given that a reminder will always fire, or always fire on time, on every device. Do not rely on the App alone where a missed reminder could cause harm, such as for medication.

What the App understands

Events you type the way you’d say them are read on the phone by simple rules, in English, and a sentence can be misread. The App shows the day, the times and the details it understood before you add an event; check them. “Share when I’m free” works out free time from the events on your phone, which may not include commitments kept elsewhere; the message is shown word for word, so check it before you send it.

Intellectual property

The App’s code is licensed to you under the GNU General Public License, as above. The “Soonest” name and icon belong to the Developer. The App works with calendar and video-call services it names, such as Google, Exchange, DAVx⁵, Meet, Zoom or Teams, but is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them; their names are trade marks of their respective owners. Android and Google Play are trade marks of Google LLC.

No warranty

As the GNU General Public License also states, the App is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including — to the fullest extent permitted by law — the implied warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality and fitness for a particular purpose.

We do not warrant that the App will be uninterrupted or error-free, that any defect will be corrected, or that it will work with every device, calendar account or calendar file.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the Developer is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss arising from your use of, or inability to use, the App — including a missed or late reminder, a misread event, a change or deletion synced to an account’s calendar, or data that cannot be recovered. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, and any mandatory consumer-protection rights you have.

Changes to the App and to these Terms

The App may be changed, suspended or discontinued in whole or in part at any time. You may stop using it at any time by uninstalling it. These Terms may be updated; the effective date above will change, and material changes will be noted in the App’s release notes on Google Play. Continuing to use the App after a change means you accept the updated Terms.

Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Spain, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, and without prejudice to any mandatory consumer-protection rights available to you under the law of your country of residence.
